For this successor to the 944 S2, most of the bodyshell parts were adopted from the predecessor. Yet, the front end of the 968 in particular was much more modern - and partly anticipated the front-end design of a later 911 model (the type 993). With the 968, a six-speed manual transmission and a Tiptronic transmission were available for the first time.
